Amsterdam: The world remains divided over the joint attack carried out by the United States and Israel in West Asia. On one side are those who justify this attack, while on the other are those who condemn it as wrong. Amidst all this, anti-Semitic sentiment is steadily on the rise across Europe. On Saturday, an explosion occurred at a Jewish school in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands. Condemning the incident, the city's Mayor, Femke Halsema, described it as an attack specifically targeting the Jewish community. According to Dutch media reports, the school premises sustained damage as a result of the blast.
According to local media reports, news of the explosion at the Jewish school emerged just days after an act of arson was committed at a synagogue (a Jewish place of worship) elsewhere in the Netherlands on Friday. Following that incident, the police arrested four individuals. However, their identities have not been disclosed in an effort to prevent the flare-up of communal tensions in the region. The police stated that the four suspects were apprehended after a car was observed circling another synagogue in a suspicious manner. The physical description of the driver matched that of a suspect involved in the earlier attack. According to the police, it remains unclear whether these four suspects—aged between 17 and 19—had planned to carry out an attack on the other synagogue. The police have also appealed to eyewitnesses to come forward with any information regarding this case.
Subsequently, the explosion at the school has once again brought to light the growing anti-Semitic sentiment prevalent in Europe. The police reported that following the blast, CCTV footage from the school was reviewed, in which an individual can be seen detonating an explosive device. Prior to this, a synagogue in the neighboring country of Belgium had also been targeted in an attack. Officials had characterized that incident as an anti-Semitic attack. While the premises sustained damage in that incident, no injuries were reported.
It is noteworthy that anti-Semitic sentiment is already a recurring phenomenon in Europe. Now that Israel and the United States are jointly launching attacks on Iran, animosity toward Israel in West Asia has intensified even further. Apprehensions are being raised that, following Khamenei's death, his hardline supporters could target Jewish people. In light of this situation, the Netherlands and other European nations have heightened security around Jewish schools, synagogues, and other institutions. There are fears that these locations could be targeted in retaliation for the ongoing attacks on Iran.
